AUSTIN, Texas – No. 3 seed Texas A&M International advanced on penalty kicks after the Heartland Conference semifinal ended in a 1-1 draw after 110 minutes of regulation. The Dustdevils scored in all four PK attempts and held the Jets to only two makes to advance. NU ends the 2015 season at 10-7-2.
After allowing a first half goal, the Jets tied the score at 1-1 in the second half. Junior
Luca Anelli scored his team-high ninth goal in the 71st minute. He hit a shot from 18 yards to the far post after a cross from
Victor Rojas, who got the assist.
TAMIU played the final 50 minutes a man down after a red card. The Jets only capitalized once with the goal by Anelli.
The Dustdevils gained the lead early in the contest in the ninth minute. Josiah Benjamin knocked in a loose ball after a header hit the post. After the first 45 minutes, TAMIU held a 1-0 advantage.
In the penalty kicks, Anelli and
Pedro Augusto took the first two shots for NU with both missing. Those two misses were enough as TAMIU made their first four shots.
Kerbson Lubin and
Gefte Blanc scored on their two PKs, but it wasn't enough as the Dustdevils got the 4-2 victory in PKs to advance.
NU held a 19-16 advantage in shots in the 110 minutes. TAMIU had 10 shots on goal to five from NU.
Calum Dillon made nine saves in 110 minutes. In the second half, Dillon made six saves.
In the overtime periods, both teams totaled three shots with zero shots on goal. In the first half, NU held a slight 9-6 edge in shots. The second half was even in shots at 7-7.
The Jets end the season at 10-7-2 and 5-3 in the Heartland Conference, ranking second in the league for the second straight season.
