Volleyball Starts Weekend with 3-0 Loss to WTAMU

WICHITA – The Newman volleyball team lost, 3-0, to West Texas A&M on Friday (Nov. 6) at Fugate Gymnasium. With the loss, the Jets dropped to 21-8 on the season. WTAMU won the sets by the scores of 25-16, 25-22 and 25-18.
 
The Lady Buffs used strong hitting, totaling a .312 hitting percentage in the match. They were at their best in the first set with a .545 hitting percentage.
 
In the first set, NU had an early 8-6 advantage, however, WTAMU went on a 7-0 run to gain a 13-8 edge. The Lady Buffs went on to win set one, 25-16. For the set, WTAMU tallied 13 kills with only one error for the .545 hitting percentage. NU hit .091 with 10 kills and seven errors.
 
The Lady Buffs pulled away late in the second for the 25-22 win. They hit .229 with 15 kills and four errors. The Jets improved to a .130 hitting percentage in the second set with 14 kills and eight on 46 attempts.
 
In the third set, WTAMU again used a late run to get the win and the 3-0 match victory. The Lady Buffs hit .282 with 14 kills and three errors in the final set. NU had its best hitting performance with 14 kills and a .146 hitting percentage.
 
For the match, NU totaled a .125 hitting percentage with 38 kills and 23 errors. WTAMU finished at .312 with 42 kills and only eight errors on 109 attempts.
 
Senior middle hitter Ashley Gonzalez finished with a team-high 10 kills and a .238 hitting percentage. With the 10 kills, Gonzalez is four kills from 1,000 for her NU career. Alexus Litts tallied a double-double of 30 assists and 14 digs, both team highs. Anna Burton added 13 digs.
 
WTAMU's Courtnee Curl registered a match-high 14 kills and hit .275. Cori Haley added nine kills with a .409 hitting percentage. Setter Jessica Jackson totaled 35 assists. Lauren Britten finished with a match-high 19 digs.
 
The Jets are back in action tomorrow (Nov. 6) with two matches. The day starts with a Heartland Conference showdown against Oklahoma Panhandle State at 11 a.m. NU then takes on Eastern New Mexico at 4 p.m. for Senior Day. Live stats and video are available for both contests.
