Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Furious Rally Falls Just Short Against UTPB

ODESSA, Texas — Daniel Nwosu turned in 24 points and seven rebounds and Taylor Schieber hit seven 3-pointers to collect 23 points as the Newman men's basketball team stormed back from a big second-half deficit, but it wasn't enough as Texas-Permian Basin held on for the 106-97 Heartland Conference victory Saturday afternoon.

KEY SEQUENCE

The Jets (7-3, 0-2 Heartland) provided a stiff challenge in the second half, but it was a five-minute stretch early in the first half that saw the Falcons (6-3, 1-0 Heartland) take it from a one-point lead to a 22-point advantage that proved just a bit too much for Newman to climb back from.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Jalen Love netted the first four points for the Jets, hitting a jumper on the team's first possession to tie things at 2-2 and laying one in to make it 5-4 two minutes later, but the Falcons went off on a 21-0 run over the next 6:30 to take control early in the first half.

-The second of two James Pegues free throws cut the lead to under 20 at 30-11 with 8:44 to go in the half.

-A three-point play followed by a 3-pointer out of Daniel Nwosu started off an 8-2 run for the Jets two minutes later, and when a Cortrael Colbert steal started a fastbreak that ended with a Kevin Bryant lay-in, the Jets were down 18 with 5:40 to go.

-The Falcons got hot once again over the final five minutes, ending the first half on a 16-4 run.

-Love scored five points over 29 seconds and Taylor Schieber nailed his second 3-pointer of the half to get the Jets on an 8-2 run coming out of the under-12 media timeout in the second half. A Nwosu triple cut the lead to 78-49 at the 10-minute mark.

-Down 81-49, Schieber popped three from behind the arc and Nwosu put back Schieber's only miss of the stretch to send the Jets on an 11-2 run to make it 83-60 with 7:44 to play.

-A pair of free throws from Love and a 3-pointer on the next possession from the senior cut the lead to 83-65, with the 18-point lead the smallest for the Falcons in nearly 20 minutes.

-Thurman turned in his own five-point stretch with free throws and a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 85-70 with 5:28 to play. When Schieber nailed two more triples around a Falcon layup, it made it 89-78 with 3:55 to go.

-Easton Julian hit a free throw to make it a 10-point lead, and Love hit a runner on the fastbreak to pull it to 93-81 with 2:52 to play, which preceded another Nwosu 3-pointer and two free throws that made it an eight-point game with 1:41 to play.

-Thurman provided a layup and Nwosu two more freebies, both cutting the lead to eight in the final two minutes, but UTPB answered each time to stretch it back out to 10, and the Falcons hit free throws when needed to hold on.

NOTES

-The Jets poured in 72 points in the second half, easily setting a new program record in the Division II era. Newman had only posted 60 points in a half three times in that span. The previous high was 62, set in the second half of the 2012-13 season opener against Tabor.

-Newman attempted 89 field goals in the game, the most in a contest this season, and hit 33. While the opening minutes of the game featured poor shooting, the Jets bounced back to shoot 31-of-71 (43.7 percent) over the final 30-plus minutes.

-The Jets outscored the Falcons 56-30 over the final 11:31, with a 45-17 run that covered nearly nine minutes doing most of the damage. That outburst saw the guests shoot 15-of-20 on field goals, 10-of-13 from 3-point range and 9-of-10 from the line.

-Schieber was 7-of-13 from beyond the arc in the game, with all seven makes coming in the second half. That helped turn around a 1-of-13 3-point shooting performance from the team in the first half to going 12-of-22 (54.6 percent) after intermission.

-Thurman posted a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Love totaled 16 points and seven assists. Colbert chipped in with nine points and a pair of steals.

-The Falcons were hot throughout the game, but the stretch between 17:18 and 12:08 in the first half saw the hosts shoot 8-of-9 from the floor, 3-of-3 from deep and 2-of-2 from the line to build the lead they would not give up.

WHAT'S NEXT

The Jets get a break over Christmas before hosting St. Mary's at Fugate Gymnasium Dec. 31 at 7:30 p.m.
