WICHITA, Kan. — Mali Wright poured in 27 points and added nine rebounds while Erica Olerich pulled in 17 boards as the Newman women's basketball rallied to tie the game up but ultimately fell in overtime 68-64 to St. Mary's in Heartland Conference play Thursday night.
KEY SEQUENCE
Olerich's 17th rebound of the night gave the Jets (7-4, 1-2 Heartland) a chance cut short a 5-0 run by the Rattlers (8-3, 2-1 Heartland). Newman fed the ball inside to Wright, who was dangerous all game, but the junior was whistled for the offensive foul as her potential game-tying shot fell, giving the ball back to St. Mary's and sealing the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Jets came out of the gate hot, never trailing until under two minutes remained in the first half. A pair of buckets from Wright and a Natalia Hausmann 3-pointer gave the hosts the early advantage.
-A trey and a layup from Bria DeGrate helped round out a 9-0 run for Newman that took the score from a 4-4 tie to a 13-4 advantage over a 2:32 span.
-Five points out of Wright and a pair of buckets from Erica Olerich and Melody McLaughlin helped stretch the lead to 11 at 22-11 with 31 seconds to play in the opening quarter.
-The Rattlers used a 7-0 run midway through the second quarter to jump back in the game, and momentarily took the lead at 31-30 before a Wright basket put the Jets back in front at the half.
-The two sides took turns flipping the lead in the third stanza, with the Rattlers going up as high as four at 41-37 just over halfway through the quarter. The guests took the lead once again with four straight points to close the quarter.
-A 3-pointer from Brianna Caldwell with 29 seconds left in regulation cut the lead to one, and the Jets fouled to get the ball back with the shot clock turned off.
-Two straight runs of excellent defense on inbounds plays forced a timeout then a turnover out of St. Mary's and gave the Jets the ball back with 16.2 seconds left.
-Holding the ball for the last shot, Shaunice Robinson cut down the left side of the lane and put up a scoop shot with her left hand, sinking the shot and drawing the free throw, which she hit to send things to overtime.
-In the extra frame, Hausmann hit the first basket, giving the Jets a 61-59 lead it would hold for over a minute. Caldwell broke a tie with a 3-pointer to make it 64-61, but the Rattlers ran off seven straight points to seal the win.
