WICHITA, Kan. — Shaunice Robinson posted 20 points, but the Newman women's basketball team could not find a hot hand to score consistently as it suffered a 62-51 loss to Texas A&M International Saturday afternoon in Heartland Conference action at Fugate Gymnasium.
KEY SEQUENCE
Tied at 9-all coming out of the first media timeout of the game, the Dustdevils (5-7, 2-2 Heartland) ran off a 10-0 run over the next four minutes to take their first lead of the game, and the only one they would need as the Jets (7-5, 1-3 Heartland).
HOW IT HAPPENED
-An offensive rebound from Cierra Tjaden led to a Natalia Hausmann 3-pointer for the first points of the game, and a Robinson jumper handed the Jets the lead one more time at the 8:23 mark.
-Erica Olerich pushed the lead to 7-3 just under three minutes into the game, and Mali Wright broke a 7-7 tie with a jumper to make it 9-7 with 5:20 to go, but the Jets fell cold from there, going 0-for-5 from the floor over the next four minutes as the Dustdevils pulled in front.
-Another Robinson jumper cut the TAMIU run off to make it 19-11 after one quarter, and two free throws out of Wright to start the second cut the lead to six, but a 3-pointer from the guests cut short any momentum.
-Robinson converted a three-point play with 8:12 to go in the second quarter to make it 23-16, and the Jets would cut the margin to seven once more in the first half.
-A stick-back from Olerich to end the first half and two free throws out of Robinson to start the second pushed the Jets on a 5-0 run that made it 35-28, but the Dustdevils responded once again to push the lead back to double digits.
-A late surge from the Jets took the deficit from 19 to 11 midway through the fourth quarter, with Robinson picking up five points, Tjaden a bucket and Brianna Caldwell a 3-pointer to make it 59-48 with 4:04 to play.
NOTES
-Robinson was 6-of-16 shooting from the floor and hit 7-of-8 from the line for her first 20-point game since scoring 21 in the season opener against Regis.
-Caldwell hit a pair of treys for her six points, and also put together a team-high seven rebounds. Olerich and Tjaden each posted six boards, with Tjaden adding four assists, a block and a steal.
-The Jets won the rebounding battle 42-39, including grabbing 19 offensive rebounds. Caldwell and Olerich led in that category, pulling down four each.
