Lady Jets Fall, 60-40, to Eagles

WICHITA – The Newman women's basketball team shot only 31.5 percent and fell, 60-40, to Oklahoma Christian on Thursday (Feb. 12) at Fugate Gymnasium. The Jets dropped to 7-15 and 4-10 in the Heartland Conference.
 
With the score close early on with OC up by three at 17-14 midway through the first half, the Eagles ended the first half on a 18-7 run to take a 35-21 lead into halftime.
 
The Eagles controlled the second half and led by at least double digits for the whole second stanza. OC held its largest advantage with 3:22 left as the Eagles were up, 58-36. The Eagles pulled to the 60-40 win.
 
NU shot 31.5 percent (17-54) from the field, and the Jets struggled from outside the arc, going 1-of-19 (5.3 percent) from 3-point distance. NU struggled at the free throw line at 45.5 percent (5-11). The Jets also committed 17 turnovers. NU held a 39-34 edge in rebounding and pulled down 12 offensive rebounds.
 
Mali Wright scored a career-high 12 points, shooting 5-of-13 from the field. She added six rebounds, two assists and one steal. Brianna Caldwell finished with 10 rebounds. Kesha Buckner pulled down eight rebounds and totaled six points.
 
OC finished at 45.6 percent (26-57) from the field. They hit seven 3s for 33.3 percent (7-21). The Eagles shot only 12.5 percent (1-8) from the free throw line.
 
Three Eagles scored in double figures. McKenzie Stanford totaled a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds. Jasmine Hinton and Makenzie Brown each scored 11 points.
 
NU is back in action in one week next Thursday (Feb. 19) against UA Fort Smith. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. at Fugate Gymnasium. Live stats, video and audio will be available.
