ResultsWICHITA – The Newman men's tennis team dropped its first match of the spring season, falling 5-4 to Rockhurst on Friday (Feb 13) at West Genesis. The Jets go to 2-1 on the spring season. Rockhurst ranks No. 9 in the Midwest region, and the Jets are ranked No. 9 in the South Central Region.
NU took one of the three courts in double competition.
Freddy Sanchez and
Eduardo Santos teamed up for an 8-4 victory at No. 1 doubles. In the No. 2 doubles match, the duo of
Alejandro Gonzalez and
Diego Rojo Fernandez lost by an 8-5 score.
Jose Enrique Coiras and
Zurab Tskhakaia lost, 8-4, at No. 3 doubles.
The Jets needed to win four singles courts to get the victory, however, NU only took three courts to come up just short at 5-4. Santos a tight match at No. 1 singles, defeating regionally ranked Truit Gray in tiebreakers in both sets for a 7-6, 7-6 win. Gonzalez pulled to a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Decho Valey at No. 2 singles. The third NU win came at No. 5 singles.
Diego Rojo Fernandez won a tight third set tiebreaker to get the victory by the scores of 6-1, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8).
Evgeniy Kim lost at No. 3 singles to Oscar Ungar, and Sanchez went down by a 6-4, 6-2 score at No. 4 singles. Coiras lost at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-0, to Daniel Chmielewski.
NU takes the court again on Sunday (Feb. 15) against East Central at 11 a.m. at West Genesis in Wichita.
