DURANT, Okla. – The Newman softball team started its day with a 10-4 victory over Texas A&M-Kingsville, but fell, 13-4, to Texas A&M-Commerce in its second game of the day. The Jets are 2-2 on the season and play two more games tomorrow.
Newman 10, Texas A&M-Kingsville
Newman scored four runs in each of the second and fourth innings to pull away from TAMUK in the first game. After falling behind 3-0, the Jets scored four runs in the second.
Kassidy Furr hit a three-run home run to tie the score at 3-3. NU took its first lead with a
Courtney Sartin RBI single for a 4-3 edge.
Texas A&M-Kingsville tied the score at 4-4 with a solo home run in the third inning.
In the fourth inning, the Jets put up four more runs to pull out to an 8-4 advantage. Sartin doubled to score
Alyssa Jarman for a 5-4 lead.
Kelsey Jones plated two more runs with a single to bring in
Breanna Pingry and Sartin. The final run of the fourth came on an
Annie Gentry RBI groundout that scored
Missy Swanson.
The Jets added some insurance runs in the fifth with two scores. Pingry doubled to score Jarman for the second time in the game. Swanson brought in the second run with a single for the 10-4 score.
Furr finished a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI and one run scored. Sartin went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Swanson was 2-for-2 with one RBI.
Katie Ingles started in the circle and get her first win of the season. She pitched the complete 7 innings and allowed four earned runs on nine hits. Ingles finished with one strikeout.
Texas A&M-Commerce 13, Newman 4
The second game started close before Texas A&M-Commerce plated eight runs in the top of the seventh inning to cruise to a 13-4 win.
Commerce went up early in the second inning with two runs. A double scored the first run, and single plated the second run for the 2-0 score.
NU tied the game in the bottom half of the second inning. Furr reached base on a throwing error and the error allowed Gentry and
Kaitlyn Padilla to score for the 2-2 tie.
Texas A&M-Commerce scored the next nine runs to blow open the game at 13-2. The first three runs came in the fourth inning. A single brought in the first two runs of the inning, and an RBI double made it 5-2 after four innings. A&M-Commerce added eight more runs in the seventh inning. They totaled eight hits in the inning, including five singles. Commerce was helped by a Jet error as six of the eight runs were unearned.
The Jets tried to rally from the huge deficit, but could only manage to score two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Gentry led off the inning with a single, and pinch-hitter
Sarah Morales hit a double to bring in Gentry for a 13-3 score. The second NU run scored on an RBI ground out from
Mikayla Medbery.
Gentry went 2-for-3 with one run scored. The Jets totaled six hits in the game.
Jensen Cromer started the game, going 6.2 innings. The sophomore allowed seven earned runs on 16 hits with six strikeouts. Jones pitched the final 0.1 inning.
NU plays two more games tomorrow. The Jets start with Southwestern Oklahoma State at 10 a.m. and then play Southeastern Oklahoma State at 3 p.m.
