ResultsWICHITA – The Newman women's tennis team erased a 3-0 deficit to rally and win 5-4 over Rockhurst on Friday (Feb. 13) at West Genesis. The Jets moved to 3-0 on the spring season and rank No. 7 in the South Central Region.
The Jets started slow, losing all three courts in doubles competition by the score of 8-5.
Lisa Pleskan and
Carissa Villaflor lost to Anna Tamara Santos and Emma Schelble at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2 doubles,
Kate Bugayenko and
Ariana Raga fell to Kim Vrugteveen and Alex Schelble. In the No. 3 doubles match,
Hillary Hicks and
Courtney Dold went down to Justine Berezintsev and Fabi Juarez.
Needing to win five of the six singles courts to get the victory, the Jets did just that. Playing at No. 1 singles, Bugayenko rolled to a 6-3, 6-1 win over Emma Schelble. In the No. 2 singles match, Pleskan cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Santos.
Tamar Tskhakaia fought through an injury to pull out a third set tiebreaker for a 6-0, 4-6, 1-0 (11-9) win over Juarez in the No. 3 singles match. The lone Jet to fall in singles was Hicks at No. 4 singles by a 6-0, 6-3 score to Alex Schelble. Dold picked up a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 5 singles over Vrugteveen, and Raga pulled away for a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles.
NU takes the court again on Sunday (Feb. 15) against East Central at 2 p.m. at West Genesis in Wichita.
