DALLAS – The Newman men's basketball team fell in overtime, 90-86, at Dallas Baptist on Saturday (Feb. 14). The Jets dropped to 12-10 and 8-8 in the Heartland Conference. With the 8-8 league record, the Jets are two games out of making the conference tournament with four games remaining. All four games left are against teams in front of NU in the conference standings.
With the score tied at 73-73 after regulation, the Patriots scored the first six points of overtime to gain a 79-73 advantage with 2:30 left.
After the quick spurt,
Ryan McCarthy hit a 3-pointer with 2:12 remaining for a 79-76 score. Three points were as close as the Jets would get in overtime. Two McCarthy free throws with 1:38 pulled NU to within three at 81-78, but DBU quickly responded with two layups for an 86-79 lead with 40 seconds left.
The two teams traded free throws with DBU hitting two with 10 seconds remaining for a 90-83 Patriot edge.
Jeremy Espinoza hit a 3-pointer with 6 seconds left for the final 90-86 score.
The final three minutes saw seven lead changes.
James Pegues put the Jets up by one point at 67-66 with 2:36 left on one free throw.
After turnovers from both teams, DBU went up by one, 68-67, with 1:41 remaining on a fastbreak layup. NU regained the lead on a
Cortrael Colbert jumper at the 1:23 mark for a 69-68 edge.
DBU went back up, 70-69, on a layup by Myles Johnson with 45 seconds remaining. Colbert responded again with a layup with 40 seconds left for a 71-70 NU advantage. Johnson scored again for DBU as they took a 72-71 edge with 28 seconds remaining.
Pegues looked like he might put the Jets up for good with a layup with 20 seconds on the clock for a 73-72 score. On DBU's possession, Tim Simmons was fouled and had two free throws. He missed the first, but knocked down the second for a 73-73 tie with 9 seconds left.
The Jets had an opportunity to win, but
Reggie Baker's 3-pointer with 2 seconds remaining missed and regulation ended with a 73-73 tie.
Espinoza totaled a double-double of 22 points and 10 rebounds in 39 minutes. He went 8-of-13 with two 3s. He added two assists and one steal. McCarthy totaled 18 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Colbert had 16 points, but shot only 4-of-15 from the field. He was 8-for-8 from the free throw line. The junior point guard added a game-high five assists. Baker scored 14 points on 5-of-20 shooting. In only 22 minutes due to foul trouble, Pegues scored 12 points on 3-of-4 shooting.
The Jets shot 43.1 percent (28-65) from the field and 29.2 percent (7-24) from 3-point range. NU shot 29 free throws, going 23-of-29 from the line.
DBU finished at 60.7 percent (34-56) from the field, including 72 percent (18-25) in the second half and 83.3 percent (5-6) in overtime. The Patriots shot 40 percent (8-20) from 3.
Myles Johnson scored a game-high 23 points. He added five assists. Franklin Uzonwanne and Amari Bryant finished with 13 points.
