DURANT, Okla. – Washburn hit two three-run home runs to pull away from the Newman softball team for a 8-1 win on Sunday (Feb. 15). The Jets finished their five-game weekend at 1-4 and dropped to 2-5 overall.
NU took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning as
Courtney Sartin scored on a passed ball. It would be the only run the Jets scored all game.
The Ichabods tied the score at 1-1 in the second inning on a sac fly. WU went in front on a single in the fourth inning for a 2-1 edge over NU.
After the first two runs, Washburn plated the rest of their runs on homers, both by Taylor Zimmerman. The first three-run home run came in the fourth inning to put the Ichabods up, 5-1. She added the second homer in the sixth inning for the 8-1 score.
Taylor Mannis went 2-for-2 at the plate. Sartin was 1-for-4 with the one run scored.
Kelsey Jones went the full 7 innings in the circle. She allowed eight hits and only two earned runs with one strikeout.
WU's Zimmerman finished at 2-for-3 with two home runs and six RBI.
NU travels to Canyon, Texas for four games next Friday and Saturday (Feb. 20-21). The Jets take on Eastern New Mexico to start on Friday in a doubleheader at 2 p.m.
