Softball Drops Two Games To Eastern New Mexico

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CANYON, Texas – The Newman softball team fell twice by the identical score of 6-1 to Eastern New Mexico on Friday (Feb. 20) at West Texas A&M. NU dropped to 2-7 on the season, and the Jets play No. 1-ranked West Texas A&M tomorrow at 1 p.m.
 
ENMU 6, NU 1
 
In the first game, NU gained an early 1-0 advantage, but ENMU plated five runs in the fifth inning to pull away for the win. Delaney Hiegert hit a bunt single to score Missy Swanson for an early 1-0 NU advantage.
 
The Zias tied the score at 1-1 in the fourth inning on a sac bunt. In the fifth inning, ENMU went up 2-1 on a single through the infield. Another run scored on an infield single, and the Zias added their final three runs on a double to right center that cleared the bases for a 6-1 score.
 
Annie Gentry went 2-for-2, and Swanson was 2-for-3 with one run scored.
 
Kelsey Jones started in the circle, going 4 innings and allowing five earned runs on eight hits. Katie Ingles pitched the final 2 innings with two hits. Jones got the loss and fell to 0-2 on the season.
 
ENMU 6, NU 1
 
In the second game, the Zias once again scored late runs to pull away for a 6-1 victory. A fielder's choice allowed ENMU to go up 1-0 in the first inning.
 
The Jets knotted the score at 1-1 in the fourth inning. Madison Bish singled to right field and Swanson scored again for the 1-1 tie.
 
The Zias totaled one run in both the fifth and sixth inning and then scored three runs in the seventh inning. ENMU went up, 2-1, on an error by the Jets allowed a run to come home from third. In the sixth inning, the Zias added another run on a single to center field for a 3-1 score.
 
In the seventh inning, a triple down the right field line plated two runs for a 5-1 score, and then a single up the middle made it 6-1 for the Zias.
 
Pingry went 2-for-3 at the plate, but the Jets only totaled five hits in game two.
 
Jensen Cromer started game two and went the full 7 innings. She gave up the six runs on 11 hits. Cromer totaled two strikeouts.
 
The Jets play No. 1-ranked West Texas A&M tomorrow at 3 p.m. in Canyon, Texas. Live stats and video will be available for the doubleheader.
