ResultsWICHITA – The Newman women's tennis team moved to 7-0 and 5-0 in the spring with a 7-1 victory over Washburn on Friday (Feb. 20) at West Genesis. The Jets, which are ranked No. 6 in the South Central Region, are back in action tomorrow (Feb. 21) against Central Oklahoma.
NU got off to a strong start with two wins in double competition.
Lisa Pleskan and
Carissa Villaflor pulled out an 8-4 victory at No. 1 doubles over WU's Jodie Blackim and Kirsten Holle. In the No. 2 doubles match,
Kate Bugayenko and
Ariana Raga dropped a close 9-7 match to Gwen Shepler and Maggie Plum. The duo of
Courtney Dold and
Tamar Tskhakaia cruised to an 8-0 victory at No. 3 doubles.
The Jets won the five single matches that were completed, all in straight sets. Bugayenko rolled to a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles. In the No. 2 singles match, Pleskan dominated in a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Tskhakaia got a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles. Dold pulled to a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 4 singles. In the No. 6 singles match, Villaflor won by the score of 6-4, 6-2. The No. 5 match didn't complete, however, Raga held a 6-1 edge when the match was called.
NU welcomes Central Oklahoma to West Genesis on Saturday (Feb. 21) at 3 p.m.
