ResultsTULSA, Okla. – The Newman men's tennis team upset No. 48-ranked Harding on Saturday (Feb. 21) at a neutral site at Philcrest Hills Tennis Center. The Jets moved to 6-3 on the season.
The Jets started strong by winning two doubles courts. The duo of
Eduardo Santos and
Freddy Sanchez continued their strong play at No. 1 doubles, winning 8-5 over David Korsten and Andras Marics. NU got a win at No. 2 doubles as
Alejandro Gonzalez and
Max Pyle pulled out a close 9-8 victory over Jon Mark Rowden and Carlos Crisostomo. Harding picked up one win in doubles, defeating
Evgeniy Kim and
Jeff Wherritt, 8-3.
In the singles matches, NU used strong play at the top to get the win. Santos was victorious 6-4, 7-5 at No. 1 singles over regionally ranked Rowden. Gonzalez got a straight set 6-2, 7-6 win at No. 2 singles, and Kim pulled out a three-set victory 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3 singles. NU also notched a win at No. 5 singles as
Diego Rojo Fernandez won after dropping the first set. He came back for a 3-6, 7-6, 6-1 win.
NU, which is ranked No. 9 in the South Central Region, starts Heartland Conference play on Friday (Feb. 27) at UA Fort Smith in Fort Smith, Ark. The match starts at 1 p.m.
