ResultsFort Smith, Ark. – The No. 46-ranked Newman women's tennis team defeated nationally ranked UA Fort Smith, 5-4, on Friday (Feb. 27) to stay perfect on the season. The Jets moved to 9-0 and 1-0 in the Heartland Conference.
NU started slow by only winning one of the three doubles matches. The team of
Kate Bugayenko and
Hillary Hicks won by the score of 8-3 at No. 2 doubles.
Lisa Pleskan and
Carissa Villaflor dropped a close match, 9-7, at No. 1 doubles, and
Tamar Tskhakaia and
Courtney Dold fell, 8-3, at No. 3 doubles.
In singles competition, the Jets used strong play at the top to win four of the six courts. Bugayenko cruised to a 6-3, 6-4 win over regionally ranked Abby White. Pleskan won a close first set, 7-5, and then rolled to a 6-2 win in set two for the victory at No. 2 singles. In the No. 3 singles match, Tskhakaia pulled out a 6-4, 6-1 win. Hicks also got a straight set victory, winning 6-3, 7-5. Dold lost in three sets at No. 5 singles 1-6, 6-2, 6-4.
Ariana Raga fell at No. 6 singles, 8-5.
The Jets moved into the national rankings for the first time in program history this week at No. 46. UAFS ranked No. 50 in the rankings for the first match in program history between two ranked opponents.
The Jets return to the court on March 5 against Missouri-St. Louis at Riverside in Wichita. The match starts at 12 p.m.
