LUBBOCK, Texas – The Newman women's basketball team shot just 22.6 percent (14-62) from the field and lost to Heartland Conference leader Lubbock Christian, 60-33, on Saturday (Feb. 7) at the Rip Griffin Center. The Jets dropped to 7-14 and 4-9 in the Heartland Conference.
The Lady Chaps pulled out to a 24-8 lead in the first 13 minutes, and the Jets couldn't recover. After the first 20 minutes, LCU held a 29-14 advantage.
In the second half, the Lady Chaps pushed their margin to as high as 31 points in the 60-33 game.
The Jets shot a season-low 22.6 percent (14-62), including only 20.7 percent (6-29) in the first half. NU finished at 17.2 percent (5-29) from 3. In only three attempts, the Jets went 0-for-3 from the free throw line.
Eledria Franklin scored a career-high and team-high nine points.
Marina Ramon Lopez added a career-high eight points and six rebounds. Brianna Cladwell scored six points and pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.
LCU shot 43.4 percent (23-53) from the field. Tess Bruffey scored a game-high 22 points of 8-of-9 shooting, including going 3-for-3 from 3. Also in double figures was Haley Fowler with 11 points. Kellyn Schneider pulled down a game-high 16 rebounds and blocked six shots. She tallied seven points, three assists and one steal. Haley Burton dished out a game-high seven assists. The Lady Chaps blocked nine shots and held a 44-36 edge in rebounding.
The Jets look to get back on track with three straight home contests. Rival Oklahoma Christian comes to Fugate Gymnasium on Thursday (Feb. 12) for a 5:30 tip. Live stats, video and audio on KGSO 1410 AM will be available for the game.
