GOODWELL, Okla. – Junior Garett Thomas went 4-for-5 with three doubles and two RBI to propel the Newman baseball team to a 5-3 win over Oklahoma Panhandle State on Sunday (Feb. 8) at Aggie Field. The Jets moved to 2-1 on the season.
With the score tied at 3-3, Thomas doubled to right field, scoring
Andrew Standish and
Tyler Bugner for a 5-3 NU edge in the fifth inning. Standish tied the score at 3-3 in the same inning with an RBI single that brought home
Tyler Evans.
NU jumped out to an early 2-0 advantage in the first inning.
Jarrod Flax led off the game with a solo home right to left field. Standish doubled to score Bugner for a 2-0 NU advantage after a half inning.
OPSU knotted the score at 2-2 in the second inning on a single to center field. A solo home run in the fourth put the Aggies up by the score of 3-2.
Thomas went 4-for-5 with three doubles and two RBI. Standish went 2-for-5 with two RBI. Flax finished at 2-for-4 with one RBI on the solo home run. Evans also had two hits, going 2-for-5 with one run scored.
In his first start at a Jet,
Dylan Porter got the win. He went 5.2 innings and allowed three runs on six hits with five strikeouts.
Tanner Lee pitched 2.1 innings with two strikeouts and only one hit.
Corey Mondello got the save in the ninth with two strikeouts.
The Jets travel to Texas A&M-Kingsville for three games next weekend. The series starts on Friday (Feb. 13) with a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. The series ends on Saturday (Feb. 14) with one game at 1 p.m.
