WICHITA – The Newman women's tennis team defeated the No. 9-ranked Cowley College on Sunday (Feb. 8) at Riverside Park. The Jets moved to 2-0 on the spring and 4-0 overall.
 
NU started with three wins in double competition. Lisa Pleskan and Carissa Villaflor got an 8-5 win over No. 21-ranked Shali Schoepflin and Lauryn Sullins at No. 1 doubles. In the No. 2 doubles match, Kate Bugayenko and Ariana Raga rolled to an 8-2 win over Logyn Williams and Eva Forneiron. Tamar Tskhakaia and Courtney Dold picked up an 8-4 at No. 3 doubles.
 
The Jets got wins over three nationally ranked juco players in singles competition. Tskhakaia defeated No. 8-ranked Anna Buiukian in a third set tiebreaker by the score of 10-4. Tskhakaia lost the first set, 6-3, but recovered in the second set for a 6-1 win to force the tiebreaker. NU won courts No. 2-6 in straight sets. Bugayenko cruised to 6-2, 6-1 victory over No. 40 Forneiron at No. 2 singles. Also facing a nationally ranked opponent, Pleskan dominated in a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles over No. 47 Schoepflin. Hillary Hicks won at No. 4 singles by a score of 6-1, 6-2. In the No. 5 singles match, Dold won, 6-0, 6-3. Villaflor was victorious by a 6-0, 6-1 score at No. 6 singles.
 
The Jets are in action on Friday (Feb. 13) against Rockhurst at 12 p.m. at West Genesis.
