Softball Uses Late Runs to Get 5-3 Series Opening Win

CLAREMORE, Okla. – The Newman softball team scored three late runs to pull away for a 5-3 victory at Rogers State on Saturday (March 14) at the Diamond Sports Complex in game one of a three game series. The Jets moved to 4-18 and 1-6 in the Heartland Conference.
 
With the score tied at 2-2, NU plated three runs in the sixth inning. Courtney Sartin started the scoring with a solo home run to left field for a 3-2 NU edge. Jensen Cromer brought home two more runs with a single to left field. Kaitlyn Buck and Katie Ingles scored for the 5-2 score.
 
In the bottom of the seventh, RSU tried to rally, but plated only one run, as the Jets hung on for the 5-3 victory.
 
NU scored the first run of the game in the second inning, as Taylor Mannis singled to the gap in left to score Kaitlyn Padilla for an early 1-0 NU advantage.
 
The Hillcats tied the score at 1-1 with an infield single with runners at second and third. RSU went up 2-1 with another single, this time to left field.
 
The Jets knotted the score at 2-2 in the fourth inning. With Sartin at third base, Ingles walked and ball four got by the catcher, allowing Sartin to score.
 
Sartin went 3-for-5 with one RBI. Buck was 2-for-3 with one run scored, and Jones was 2-for-4. Cromer finished with a game-high two RBI. Eight Jets totaled hits, as NU tallied 12 hits in the contest.
 
Ingles started in the circle, going the first 3 innings. She allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits. Cromer came in for relief, going 4 innings and allowing one run on three hits. She got the win and moved to 2-6 on the season.
 
The three-game series concludes tomorrow (March 15) with a doubleheader at 12 p.m. in Claremore, Okla.
