WICHITA –
Taylor Schawe hit a game-winning walk-off home run to lift Newman softball to a 9-7 win over No. 20 Emporia State on Monday (March 16) at the Newman softball field. It's the first all-time win for the Jets over the Hornets. ESU won game two, 8-0, of the doubleheader.
Newman 9, Emporia State 7
The Jets trailed by one run, 7-6, going into the bottom of the seventh after ESU hit a solo home run in the top of the inning. With runners at second and third,
Kelsey Jones hit a sac fly to center to tie the score at 7-7. Schawe sent a 3-2 pitch over the right field fence to give NU the 9-7 win.
Errors by ESU in the third inning allowed NU to score one run for an early 1-0 advantage.
The Hornets plated the next six runs to pull out to a 6-1 lead. In the fourth, RSU totaled four runs. A single to center tied the score at 1-1. A double down the line made it 2-1. The lead grew to 4-1 with a single to left field to score two more runs. In the fifth, ESU made it 6-1 with a homer to center field.
In the fifth, NU totaled one run on a ground out by
Katie Ingles for a 6-2 score. The Jets tied the score at 6-6 with four runs in the sixth inning. Jones singled to left field to score
Jensen Cromer.
Sarah Morales, who was pinch hitting, blasted a home run to right field for three runs and to knot the score at 6-6 after six innings.
The Jets totaled 12 hits in game one. Jones went 2-for-2 with two RBI.
Kaitlyn Buck and
Taylor Mannis both went 2-for-4. Nine Jets finished with hits.
Emporia State 8, Newman 0
ESU scored the first run of game two in the second inning on a single through the infield. They added four runs in the fourth inning to open up a 5-0 lead after four innings. A double down the line in the fifth inning increased the Hornet edge to 6-0.
The Hornets added two runs in the seventh to get the 8-0 win.
NU totaled only four hits in the second game.
Taylor Mannis,
Breanna Pingry, Jones and
Madison Bish all totaled hits for the Jets.
The Jets go on the road for seven straight games. NU goes to Texas A&M-Commerce on Wednesday (March 18) for a doubleheader at 4 p.m. in Commerce, Texas.
