SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Newman softball team dropped both games of a Heartland Conference doubleheader to No. 9 St. Mary's on Sunday (March 22) at the Park at St. Mary's. NU fell to 6-22 and 2-9 in the Heartland Conference with two losses by the identical scores of 7-0.

The Rattlers used two two-run home runs to pull away for a 7-0 win in game one.
The StMU scoring started in the first inning with an RBI infield single for a 1-0 lead in the first inning. In the second inning, the Rattlers added two more runs on a double to left center for a 3-0 edge after two complete innings.
StMU's Taylor Vidrine hit two consecutive two-run home runs to make it 7-0. She hit the first two-run shot in the fifth inning to center field for a 5-0 score. In the sixth inning, Vidrine added one more two-run homer for the final 7-0 score.
Vianna Gutierrez Touchstone held the Jets to only one hit. She went all 7 innings and struck out seven with four walks and the one hit.
Courtney Sartin got the one hit in game one. She hit an infield single in the fourth inning.
St. Mary's 7, Newman 0
The Rattlers used small ball in the second game to pull out to a 7-0 win. Five of the seven runs scored on RBI singles. The scoring started in the first inning with a double to left field to give StMU a 1-0 edge.
StMU plated two more runs in the second inning. First on a single to left field for a 2-0 score and then the Rattlers stole home for a 3-0 edge. In the third, two more StMU runs came home, both on singles to left field. Consecutive RBI singles from Sydney Wellman plated the final two runs in the fourth and sixth innings for the 7-0 score.
The Jets totaled five hits in game two. Sartin,
Taylor Mannis and
Katie Ingles all went 1-for-3 at the plate. Pinch hitters
Ellise McGowan and
Sarah Morales each totaled hits and went 1-for-1.
The three-game series ends on Monday (March 23) with one game at 1 p.m. in San Antonio, Texas.
