WICHITA – The Newman men's tennis team moved to 3-0 in the Heartland Conference with a dominating 8-1 win over Dallas Baptist on Saturday (March 21) at Riverside Park. NU won its fourth straight match and moved to 12-4 overall.
The Jets started by winning two of the three singles courts with its only loss of the day at No. 2 doubles.
Jose Enrique Coiras and
Evgeniy Kim lost a close 9-7 match to Leighton Forshee and Bryant Forshee of DBU. NU got the wins at No. 1 and 3 doubles.
Eduardo Santos and
Alejandro Gonzalez cruised to an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles. In the No. 3 doubles match,
Max Pyle and
Freddy Sanchez picked up an 8-4 win.
NU dominated in singles competition, winning five of the six matches in straight sets. Santos pulled out to a 6-0, 7-5 victory at No. 1 singles over Cannon Jones. At No. 2 singles, Gonzalex made quick work of Leighton Forshee with a 6-1, 6-3 win. In the closest match of the day, Kim dropped set one by a 6-1 score, but then battled back to get a close 7-6 victory in the second set. He went on to win the third set tiebreaker by a 10-7 score.
Diego Rojo Fernandez was victorious by a 6-4, 6-1 score at No. 4 singles. Coiras blanked Jordan Jackson, winning by a 6-0, 6-0 score at No. 5 singles. At the No. 6 singles match,
Jeff Wherritt got by Anthony Burch with a 6-3, 6-3 victory.
With the win, the No. 7-ranked Jets in the region moved to 3-0 in the Heartland Conference with only St. Edward's and St. Mary's left in the conference slate.
The Jets take on Friends University on Monday at 2 p.m. at Riverside Park.
