WICHITA – The No. 46-ranked Newman women's tennis team suffered its first loss of the season, going down 6-3 to No. 41-ranked Dallas Baptist on Saturday (March 21) at Riverside Park. The loss snaps NU's 13-match winning streak to start the season. The Jets are now 13-1 and 2-1 in the Heartland Conference.
NU trailed after doubles competition by a 2-1 score. Getting the only doubles victory was
Kate Bugayenko and
Hillary Hicks. The duo dominated in an 8-0 victory at No. 2 doubles. At No. 1 doubles,
Lisa Pleskan and
Carissa Villaflor lost by an 8-1 score to Natalie Gennissen and Amanda Richter. DBU's Bianca Tijerina and Maria Fernandez won by an 8-5 score over
Tamar Tskhakaia and
Ariana Raga at No. 3 doubles.
The Jets won two of the six singles matches, including an impressive win at No. 1 singles by Bugayenko. She defeated No. 35-ranked Gennissen in three sets. Genneissen won set one by a close 7-6 score, however, Bugayenko won the next two sets by 6-3 and 6-2 scores to get the upset win. Villaflor got the only victory at No. 6 singles. She won 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) over Courtney McWilliams.
NU fell in the other four singles courts. Pleskan lost in two sets 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) to regionally ranked Cassandra Wennerstrom. Tskakaia's No. 3 singles match went unfinished, giving DBU the win. The match was tied at one set each. In the No. 4 singles match, Hicks lost by a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) score to Amanda Richter. And in the No. 5 singles match,
Courtney Dold went down by a 6-3, 6-4 score to Liz Slaughter.
NU plays Friends on Monday (March 23) at 2 p.m. at Riverside Park in Wichita.
