WICHITA – The Newman men's tennis team won its five straight match with a 9-0 victory over Friends on Monday (March 23) at Riverside Park. With the win, the Jets moved to 13-4 on the season.
NU started with three strong wins in double competition.
Eduardo Santos and
Alejandro Gonzalez got an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles. In No. 2 doubles,
Jose Enrique Coiras and
Max Pyle picked up a close 9-7 victory. The Jets got the sweep of doubles competition with an 8-3 victory at No. 3 doubles by
Freddy Sanchez and
Diego Rojo Fernandez.
The Jets continued to roll by taking all six singles courts. Santos, who was named the Heartland Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week today, cruised to a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles. Gonzalez made quick work of FU's Ferdinand Ostrowicki with a 6-0, 6-2 win. In the closest match of the day, Kim lost the first set, but came back to win set two, 6-1. In the tiebreaker, Kim won by an 11-9 score. Fernandez won at No. 4 singles by a 6-3, 6-2 score. At No. 5 singles, Coiras dominated in a 6-0, 6-0 victory.
Jeff Wherritt was victorious by a 6-2, 6-2 score at No. 6 singles.
NU is back in action tomorrow (March 24) against Southwest Baptist at 1 p.m. at Riverside Park.
