WICHITA – The Newman baseball team defeated Northwestern Oklahoma State, 7-5, on Tuesday (March 24) at McCarthy Field. With the win, the Jets won four of their last five games and moved to 12-12 on the season.
Senior
Tanner Lee pitched 5.2 strong inning to get the win. He allowed six hits and three runs with five strikeouts.
Kevin Luman,
Skyler Barnes and
Lane Ramsey combined to pitch the final 3.1 innings. The trio combined for five hits one earned run and four strikeouts.
The Rangers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning with a single up the middle; however, the Jets tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the first.
Tyler Bugner singled to score
Tyler Evans.
Garett Thomas put the Jets up 2-1 in the third inning with a single to score Bugner.
Freshman
Daniel Jahnke hit a two-run home run to right field, his first career homer, to increase the NU lead to 4-2.
NWOSU closed to within one with two runs in the sixth inning. A wild pitch allowed one run to score from third base, and with the Rangers in a rundown between first and second, a NWOSU runner scored from third for a 4-3 score.
In the sixth inning, Evans hit a sac fly to right to plate
Aaron Mack from third. The run put the Jets up 5-3.
After a NWOSU run in the seventh inning, the Jets added on to their lead with two runs. Thomas doubled to score
Andrew Standish. Mack singled to right center to allow Thomas to score for the 7-4 score.
One run scored for NWOSU in the ninth inning due to an NU error, but the Jets put the Rangers away for the 7-5 win.
Jahnke finished 2-for-3 with two RBI. Thomas was 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored. Bugner was also 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored. Eight of the nine Jets in the lineup finished with hits.
The Jets return to Heartland Conference play this weekend with a three-game series against Oklahoma Christian at McCarthy Field. The series starts with a doubleheader on Friday (March 27) at 3 p.m. at McCarthy Field. Live stats and audio will be available.
