Baseball Takes One of Two to Get Split at UAFS

FORT SMITH, Ark. – The Newman baseball team split at UA Fort Smith on Friday (April 10). The Jets won game one, 8-5, but dropped game two, 17-6. With the split, NU moved to 15-19 on the season and 5-11 in the Heartland Conference.

The Jets built an 8-0 lead in game one and hung on for the 8-5 win. NU started by scoring one run in the first inning. Garett Thomas singled to right field to score Tyler Evans for a 1-0 score.
 
NU added one more run in the third inning on a Lion error, and then the Jets poured on three runs in each the fourth and fifth innings. Aaron Mack started the scoring with a two-RBI triple down the line to score Alex Lator and Thomas for a 4-0 NU edge. Daniel Jahnke singled through the infield to score Mack to make it 5-0.
 
Thomas hit a three-run home run to right field in the fifth inning to increase the Jet edge to 8-0. Andrew Standish and Evans scored along with Thomas on the homer.
 
UAFS scored one run in the sixth and added four runs in the seventh, but came up short in the 8-5 game.
 
Thomas went 3-for-4 with four RBI. Mack was 2-for-4 with two RBI, and Evans finished at 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
 
Lucas Schauer got the win, going 6.2 innings. He struck out six and allowed five runs on eight hits.
 
UAFS 17, Newman 6
 
In the second game, NU went up 5-3 in the second inning, but the Lions responded with seven runs in the third and five runs in the fifth to pull away for a 17-6 win after seven innings.
 
UAFS plated three runs in the first inning. After an RBI groundout, a single to left field brought in two more runs for a 3-0 lead.
 
The Jets totaled five runs in the second inning. The scoring started on a single from Lator, scoring Thomas. Jahnke singled to right to bring in Lator for a 3-2 score. A wild pitch allowed Lucas Norton to score to tie the score at 3-3 and then an error brought Jahnke in for a 4-3 NU edge. Evans singled through the infield to plate Jarrod Flax for a 5-3 lead.
 
In the third inning, UAFS plated seven runs. After an RBI triple made it 5-4, the Lions tied the score at 5-5 on a single to left center. UAFS went up 6-5 on a single to right center, and then another triple upped the advantage to 8-5. A double to left field made it 9-5 and an error allowed the final run of the inning to score for the 10-5 edge.
 
NU scored its final run in the fifth inning on a fielder's choice. Mack got an RBI on the play as Standish scored.
 
The Lions totaled five more runs in the fifth inning. The spurt started with a solo home run, and then a single up the middle made it 12-6. One more run scored on another single up the middle. A double to right field plated two runs for a 15-6 score. The final two runs scored on a triple down the line and then on a double down the line for the 17-6 advantage.
 
Lator went 3-for-4 with one RBI in game two. Thomas and Tyler Bugner were 2-for-4.
