DALLAS – The Newman women's tennis team lost, 9-0, to No. 13 St. Mary's on Friday (April 10) at the L.B. Houston Tennis Center. With the loss, the No. 46-ranked Jets dropped to 17-3 and 2-2 in the Heartland Conference.
The Rattlers sweep the doubles competition. No. 7-ranked Mariana Rong and Cristina Lopez defeated regionally ranked
Carissa Villaflor and
Lisa Pleskan by an 8-1 score. StMU's No. 2 doubles team is ranked No. 20 and won 8-1 over
Tamar Tskhakaia and
Kate Bugayenko. In the No. 3 doubles match, StMU's Tyra Timm and Felicity Delgado defeated
Hillary Hicks and
Courtney Dold by an 8-3 score.
Rong, who is ranked No. 33 in singles, defeated Bugayenko 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1 singles. In the No. 2 singles match, Lopez, who is ranked No. 39, won by a 6-1, 6-2 score over Pleskan. Tskhakaia came up just short at No. 3 singles, falling in a third-set tiebreaker. She lost the first set, 6-4, and then came back to win set two, 6-3. In the tiebreaker, Tskhakaia fell by a 10-7 score. Hicks lost at No. 4 singles by a 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) score to Timm. In the No. 5 singles match, Dold fell by a 6-2, 6-0 score to Fecility Delgado. At No. 6 singles, StMU's Joanie Bryant won by a 6-3, 6-4 score over
Ariana Raga.
The Jets are back in action tomorrow (April 11) against St. Edward's in Dallas.
