DALLAS – The No. 46-ranked Newman women's tennis team fell, 7-2, to No. 36 St. Edward's on Saturday (April 11) in Heartland Conference action at the Arlington Tennis Center. With the loss, the Jets dropped to 17-4 and 2-3 in the conference. NU, however, will advance to the Heartland Conference Tournament on April 24-26 in Dallas, Texas.
NU won one of the three doubles matches.
Kate Bugayenko and
Hillary Hicks were victorious by an 8-3 score at No. 2 doubles for the line doubles victory. At No. 1 doubles, No. 22-ranked Brooke Hughes and Sasha Khadzhyan won by an 8-2 score over
Lisa Pleskan and
Carissa Villaflor. In the No. 3 doubles match,
Courtney Dold and
Ariana Raga lost by an 8-2 score to Rafaela Haegele and Marissa Williams.
The Hilltoppers got wins at the top five singles matches. Villaflor picked up a victory at No. 6 singles for the Jets. After dropping the first set, Villaflor won 6-4 and then won the tiebreaker, 10-8.
Khadzhyan defeated Bugayenko 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles. In the No. 2 singles match, Haegele won in three over Pleskan. After dropping the first set, Pleskan battled back to even the match at 1-1 with a 6-3 win. However, Haegele won, 6-1, in the third set. In the No. 3 singles match, Ivana Zecevic defeated
Tamar Tskhakaia by a 6-0, 6-4 score. At No. 4 singles, Hicks fell by a 6-2, 7-5 score to Francesca Chaher. Dold lost at No. 5 singles 6-3, 6-0 to Summer Biggs.
The Jets end the regular season next Saturday (April 18) against Fort Hays State at Riverside Park in Wichita. The match starts at 12 p.m.
