Jets Split Final Road Doubleheader at William Jewell

LIBERTY, Mo. – The Newman softball team split at William Jewell in a doubleheader in the Jets final two road contests of the season on Wednesday (April 15). The Jets dropped game one, 5-4, and then won game two, 4-3. NU moved to 13-32 on the season.

William Jewell 5, Newman 4

The Jets took a 4-3 lead in the fourth inning on a grand slam home run, but the edge didn't hold as WJC came back for the 5-4 win.

Kassidy Furr went deep in the fourth, hitting the grand slam homer to put the Jets up 4-3. Kelsey Jones, Breanna Pingry and Courtney Sartin all scored on the homer.

The Cardinals tied the score at 4-4 in the fourth inning on a solo home run. In the sixth inning, WJC plated the game-winning run on an infield single to go up 5-4.

WJC pulled out to a 3-0 advantage in the first three innings. A double to left field in the second inning made it 1-0, and then another double upped the edge to 2-0. In the third inning, a sacrifice fly put the Cardinals up 3-0.

NU totaled 10 hits. Furr went 2-for-3 with four RBI. Jones was 2-for-2 with one run scored. Taylor Mannis continued her hot streak, going 2-for-4 in the leadoff spot.

Newman 4 William Jewell 3

Jones plated all four of the runs in the first inning on a grand slam home run for an early 4-0 lead. Pingry, Sartin and Medbery all scored along with Jones. The early four runs would be enough as the Jets won, 4-3.

A walk with the bases loaded put one WJC run on the board in the fourth inning. In the sixth inning, the Cardinals plated their second run on an RBI groundout. The final run scored in the seventh inning on another ground out for the 4-3 score.

Mannis went 2-for-4 and had her fourth straight multi-hit game. She has a seven-game hitting streak with six games of two or more hits.

Katie Ingles started in the circle and went the complete 7 innings. She allowed three runs on 10 hits with five strikeouts. Ingles moved to 7-13 on the season.

The Jets return to conference action this weekend against St. Edward's at the Newman Softball Field. Live stats will be available.
