Softball Drops Two Against Cameron

WICHITA – The Newman softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader against Cameron on Tuesday (April 21) at the Newman Softball Field. CU took game one, 7-1, and then won game two, 7-5, with a late rally. NU fell to 13-36, and the Aggies moved to 35-14.

The Aggies plated five runs in the first inning and pulled away for a 7-1 win in game one. A double to left field scored the first two runs and then a single up the middle made it 3-0. A single to left upped the edge to 5-0, and the lead grew to 5-0 on an RBI single.
 
A two-run homer in the third inning upped the advantage to 7-0.
 
The Jets got their one run in the third inning on an RBI single by Taylor Mannis, scoring Kassidy Furr.
 
Kaitlyn Buck and Kelsey Jones both went 2-for-3. Mannis and Furr were 1-for-3.
 
Katie Ingles got the start in the circle, going the first 3 innings. Jensen Cromer came in to pitch the final 4 innings.
 
Cameron 7, Newman 5
 
After allowing two runs in the top of the first, the Jets responded with five runs in the bottom half of the inning to gain an early 5-2 advantage. Cameron scored four runs in the fourth, and added one more in the seventh to rally for the 7-5 win.
 
A solo home run in the first put the Aggies in front, 1-0. A single to right center made it 2-0 for the Aggies.
 
With the bases loaded, Jones singled to left field to put the Jets on the board. A triple by Cromer plated three runs to give the Jets a 4-2 lead. Alyssa Jarman singled through the infield to score Cromer for the 5-2 advantage.
 
Another solo home run by CU pulled the Aggies to two runs at 5-3. They knotted the score at 5-5 with a two-RBI single. The game-winning run scored on an illegal pitch for the 6-5 score. CU added one more run on third solo home run of the game.
 
Cromer went 2-for-3 with three RBI. Courtney Sartin finished at 2-for-4 with one run scored.
 
Jones, Katie Ingles and Cromer all saw action in the circle. Jones started and went the first 3.2 innings. Ingles pitched the next 2.1 innings, and Cromer went the final inning.
 
The Jets are back in action tomorrow (April 22) against Bethany College at 5 p.m. at the Newman Softball Field.
