DALLAS - The Newman women's tennis team lost in the semifinals of the Heartland Conference Tournament to No. 13 St. Mary's by the score of 5-0 on Friday (April 24) at the Southern Methodist University Complex. With the loss, the No. 46-ranked Jets dropped to 18-5 on the season.
The Rattlers started the match by winning all three of the doubles courts. At No. 1 doubles, Mariana Rong and Cristina Lopez pulled out to an 8-4 win over regionally ranked
Lisa Pleskan and
Carissa Villaflor. In the No. 2 doubles match, Jamie Lee Denton and Kaylin Kruseman defeated
Hillary Hicks and
Kate Bugayenko by an 8-2 score.
Ariana Raga and
Courtney Dold dropped a close 9-8 match to Tyra Timm and Felicity Delgado at No. 3 doubles.
StMU got the two wins they needed in singles competition to clinch the match by the 5-0 score. Denton won 6-3, 6-2 over Dold at No. 3 singles, and Kruseman defeated Hicks by a 6-4, 6-0 score at No. 4 singles. The other four matches went unfinished. Raga and Pleskan were both holding leads when the match was called.
NU finishes the 2014-15 season with a 18-5 record, and the Jets were nationally ranked for the first time in NCAA Division II history. They are currently ranked No. 46 in the ITA rankings.
