WICHITA – The Newman men's tennis team, which is ranked No. 7 in the South Central Region, won its second straight with an 8-1 win over Bethel College on Thursday (April 3) at Riverside. With the win, the Jets move to 16-6.
The Jets started with wins in two of the three doubles matches. At No. 1 doubles,
Eduardo Santos and
Jose Enrique Coiras cruised to an 8-0 victory. In the No. 2 doubles match,
Max Pyle and
Evgeniy Kim went down in a close 8-6 match to Jesse Voth-Gaeddert and Jenson Kingsley. NU got the win at No. 3 doubles as
Zurab Tskhakaia and
Jeff Wherritt teamed up for an 8-1 victory.
In singles competition, NU won all six courts. Santos pulled out to an easy 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles. In the No. 2 singles match, Kim made quick work of Chris Soosalu with a 6-2, 6-1 win. Pyle responded after the doubles loss by getting a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 3 singles. In the closest singles match, Wherritt won set one, 7-6, and then after falling in set two, 7-5, he won the third set tiebreaker by a close 10-8 score. Daniel Smith won 7-5, 6-3 at No. 5 singles, and at No. 6 singles, Josh Smith was victorious by a 6-4, 6-0 score.
NU plays its final non-conference match of the season on Saturday (April 4) against Cameron at 1:30 p.m. at Riverside Park in Wichita. It is also the final home match for the Jets.
