WICHITA – The Newman baseball team upset No. 8 St. Edward's on Saturday (May 2) by the score of 15-11 on Senior Day at McCarthy Field. The win ends a five-game losing streak to SEU, and the Jets finish the 2015 season at 23-24 overall and 12-15 in the Heartland Conference. Senior
Alex Lator was a triple away from hitting for the cycle, finishing 4-for-5 with three RBI.
NU jumped out to a 12-1 advantage, scoring runs in the first four innings. After SEU got one run in the top of the first, the Jets poured on five runs to take a 5-1 lead after one.
Tyler Evans tripled to left center to score
Jarrod Flax and tie the score at 1-1.
Andrew Standish doubled to left to score Evans and advance

Garett Thomas doubled down the line to score both Standish and Bugner for a 4-1 edge. The final run of the inning scored on a
Lucas Norton double to center field.
In the second inning, the Jets added four more runs to take a 9-1 lead. Bugner singled to score Flax. Lator hit the longest home run of the season at McCarthy Field, knocking out a three-run shot to left field. NU went up 9-1 with the three-run homer.
Norton hit the second homer of the game to left field to make it 10-1 in the third inning. A balk scored one run in the fourth inning, and then
Aaron Mack hit a sacrifice fly to plate Lator for the 12-1 advantage.
The Hilltoppers scored six runs in the fifth inning to close the gap to 12-7. SEU used home runs to score all of their runs. A two-run homer started the scoring. The Hilltoppers hit a solo shot to left field, and SEU got their final three runs of the inning on a three-run homer.
Standish singled to center field in the seventh inning to score Bugner for a 13-7 advantage.
In the eighth inning, the Hilltoppers put up four runs to pull to within two at 13-11. A double down the line plated two runs, and then a single over third basemen Thomas added another run. A ground out to first added another run for the 13-11 score.
NU got two insurance runs in the eighth inning to go up 15-11. Flax got the first RBI, and a Bugner double down the line scored one more run. Flax was thrown out at home to end the eighth.
With two runners on and no outs,
Joe Cannady came in to get the final three outs to end the game and give NU the 15-11 win. With the bases loaded after a hit by pitch, Cannady retired the next three Hilltoppers. A fly out to Bugner got the first out, and a strikeout put NU one out away. SEU fouled out to Evans to end the contest.
The Jets gave SEU starter Cameron Stanton his first loss. NU totaled nine hits and nine runs – six earned – in only 2 innings for Stanton. Stanton had a 2.02 ERA and 7-0 record coming into today's game.
Senior
Cody Fredericksen got the win in his final start. He went 5 innings and allowed seven hits and seven runs. He had three strikeouts.

David Herrera pitched the next 3 innings. Cannady finished the ninth inning, getting the save.
NU totaled 16 hits, 10 coming from seniors. Lator went 4-for-5 with three RBI. Standish went 2-for-5 with two RBI. Flax and Evans were both 2-for-6 with one RBI. Bugner went 2-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored. He worked three walks. Norton finished 2-for-5 with two RBI, and Thomsa was 1-for-4 with two RBI.
