LUBBOCK, Texas – The Newman volleyball team extended its winning streak to six straight with a tight 3-2 win at Lubbock Christian on Saturday (Sept. 19) at Rip Griffin Center. With the victory, NU moved to 8-4 on the season and 2-1 in the Heartland Conference.
The Jets pulled out to a 2-0 advantage, but dropped the next two sets. In the final set, NU got a 15-11 victory.
NU won, 25-21, to open the match. The Jets dominated the second set to a 25-15 victory to take a 2-0 advantage into intermission. In the second set, NU hit a match-best .267 with only three errors. The Lady Chaps struggled to a -.027 hitting percentage with eight kills and nine errors.
In the third set, both teams hit well, but LCU pulled away for a 25-20 win. The Lady Chaps hit .310 with 16 kills and three errors. The Jets finished with 15 kills and five errors to hit .213.
LCU again hit well in the fourth set, getting a 25-23 win. With the score tied at 22-22, back-to-back errors from the Jets gave them set point at 24-22. A block assist by

Ashley Gonzalez allowed NU to stay in it at 24-23, but LCU got a kill to finish off the set. For the set, the Lady Chaps hit .222 with a match-high 17 kills. NU totaled 15 kills and seven errors for a .182 hitting percentage.
In the final set, the Jets started strong to build a 6-1 advantage. Gonzalez,
Kayla Turner and
Gaylynn Jones all had kills in the early run. LCU battled back for a 7-5 score, forcing NU to take a timeout. With the score at 11-8, the Jets got three straight points to have match point at 14-8. After three points from LCU, Gonzalez put the match away with a kill for the 15-11 win.
Gonzalez tallied a match-high 26 kills and hit .310.
Emily Harvey added 13 kills and a .211 hitting percentage. Turner totaled another double-double with 12 kills and 17 digs. Jones finished with a team-high 24 digs.
For the match, NU hit .192 with 64 kills and 25 errors. LCU totaled 61 kills and 31 errors for a .145 hitting percentage.
The Jets return home for six straight matches. NU hosts St. Edward's on Thursday (Sept. 24) at 7 p.m. in Fugate Gymnasium.
