Strong Hitting Leads Jets to 3-0 Win in Home Opener

WICHITA – The Newman volleyball hit .377 to dominate in a 3-0 win over Bacone College on Tuesday (Sept. 8) at Fugate Gymnasium in the NU home opener. The Jets were victory by the scores of 25-10, 25-15 and 25-15. With the win, NU moved to 2-3 on the season.
 
In the opening set, the Jets hit an impressive .667 with 13 kills and only one error in only 18 attempts. Senior middle hitter Ashley Gonzalez totaled five kills in the first set with the one error to hit .667. Gaylynn Jones hit .800 in the first set and tallied four kills.
 
The second set saw the Jets cool off, hitting only .212 with 14 kills and seven errors. Laura Hageman finished with six kills in the set and hit .500. Gonzalez added three kills.
 
NU finished with a third set performance of 16 kills with six errors and a .385 hitting percentage. Freshman Yemima Buana had a set-high five kills and hit .375. For the second straight set Hageman hit .500 with four kills. Emily Harvey added three kills on four attempts for a .750 hitting percentage.
 
For the match, NU hit .377 with 43 kills and 14 errors on 77 attempts. They also had 11 service aces, including five from Andrea Wheeler. Gonzalez added three aces.
 
Hageman finished with a match-high 10 kills and hit .500. Gonzalez tallied eight kills and hit .500. Alexus Litts totaled a match-high 27 assists and eight digs. Freshman Raygen Lee added nine assists.
 
For the match, the Warriors hit .000 all three sets. They finished with 12 kills and 12 errors. Gladymar Echeverria had a team-high six kills. Bacone struggled with ball handling errors, tallying five.
 
The Jets won their third straight home opener. In 2014, NU defeated Dallas Baptist, 3-1, to start the season, and in 2013 they won, 3-2, over Texas-Permian Basin.
 
NU goes on the road for their next seven matches, including three Heartland Conference contests. The conference schedule starts this Thursday (Sept. 10) at defending conference champion UA Fort Smith at 5 p.m. in Fort Smith, Ark. NU then plays in the Arkansas Tech Tournament on Friday and Saturday (Sept. 11-12).
