WICHITA, Kan. — A scoreless tie at the half opened up in the second half, but the Newman men's scocer team fell to No. 3 St. Edward's 3-1 in a matchup of the top two teams in the Heartland Conference Saturday afternoon at Wilkins Field.
KEY SEQUENCE
The Jets (6-3-1, 4-1-1, 13 pts Heartland) charged back to tie things up at 1-1 with 16 minutes left in the game, but the Hilltoppers (9-1-0, 5-1-0, 15 pts Heartland) answered five minutes later with an excellent shot by Steve Aoudou, who put up a shot from the left side inside the far post for what would end up being the game-winning goal.
SCORING PLAYS
62'-SEU-Grant Mobley, assist Samuel Jackson. Pass into the box from the right, Mobley ripped a volley off his chest inside the far post.
75'-NU-Marian Saar, penalty kick. Saar buried his PK high and to the right as the St. Edward's keeper dove the other way.
80'-SEU-Steve Aoudou, unassisted. Shot from 12 yards out from the left side, past keeper to the far corner.
89'-SEU-Julian Sanchez, unassisted. Chip shot while the keeper was out of the net, crept over goal line.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Jets got out to a fast start on offense, as Ed Jabbari got off a shot from the top of the box in the second minute that got SEU keeper Kevin Leib to make a save. Two minutes later, Marian Saar cracked a shot wide.
-SEU's first shot forced a save out of Newman keeper Blake Andrews in the 14th minute, but the Jets were again on the attack less than two minutes later, as Vince Couto's shot need a save.
-The Jets seemed to grab the first score of the game as the clock ticked under 10 minutes to play, but were whistled for offsides at the same time the ball was finding the back of the net.
-Tommy Fiszel took the first shot of the second half in the 50th, and Connor Rackley nearly got the Jets on the board on a mad scramble in the 62nd, but his shot was headed off the line by a St. Edward's defender.
-The Hilltoppers broke the scoreless draw with a slick shot by Grant Mobley in the 62nd, but Newman came right back to tie it when Kieran Laking was pulled down in the box to draw a penalty kick in the 75th.
-St. Edward's went back up in the 80th, but the Jets weren't backing down, as Luca Anelli and Gefte Blanc each got off a danger shot in the 85th, but both chances were saved by keeper Kevin Leib. The guests got an all-important insurance goal on a trickler with just over a minute to go to preserve the win.
NOTES
-The loss was the first of the Heartland Conference season for the Jets, who had a seven-game unbeaten streak snapped. It was their first loss since the opening weekend of the season.
-The penalty kick for Saar was the senior's second in seven days. It was nearly a mirror image of his PK late against No. 24 Midwestern State that proved to be the difference in the Jets' 1-0 win Sunday.
-Newman outshot St. Edward's 10-8 overall and 7-5 in shots on goal. Andrews made two saves in goal for the Jets.
