Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Newman Falls To MSU In Final Road Game

WICHITA FALLS, Texas — A trio of second half goals ended up being too much as the Newman men's soccer team saw its three-game winning streak snapped at the hands of Midwestern State Thursday night.

KEY SEQUENCE

With the Jets (9-6-2, 7-4-2, 23 pts Heartland) still right in the game as Thursday's matchup against the Mustangs (14-2-1, 12-1-0, 36 pts Heartland) as the clock ticked along in the second half, the hosts were able to quickly add to the lead, scoring twice within three minutes from the 74th to the 77th to build an insurmountable lead.

SCORING PLAYS

37'-MSU-Gabriel Cavalcante, unassisted. Dribbled ball into box and beat keeper to right corner.

74'-MSU-Ross Fitzpatrick, assist Patrick Fitzgerald. Fitzpatrick headed Fitzgerald's feed into the left side.

76'-MSU-Jacob Hernandez, unassisted. Hernandez brought the keeper off his spot and then slipped it by him.

81'-Fitzgerald, penalty kick.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-After a quite first 15 minutes, the Mustangs ripped off four shots and picked up two corners over a seven-minute span that finished in the 22nd.

-Vitor Okamoto got off Newman's first shot in the 26th, coming off an Ed Jabbari corner. MSU followed with two shots over the next few minutes, then a period of sustained action in the hosts' offensive end resulted in the opening score of the game in the 37th.

-A calm start to the second half got rolling for the Jets nearly 20 minutes in, as Okamoto put up a corner in the 62nd that Luca Anelli headed on goal to force a save out of MSU. Vince Couto added another header that slipped high later in the possession.

-The Mustangs used their three-goal run in the final 20 minutes to take control.

NOTES

-The Jets had previously locked up a spot in the Heartland Conference postseason, but the result Thursday helped solidify some things. The win sealed the regular-season title and No. 1 seed for MSU, while the Newman is now guaranteed to play in Tuesday's quarterfinal round.

-Newman will face Rogers State on Tuesday. The Jets host the Hillcats Saturday, which will determine the site of Tuesday's playoff game. RSU needs to win Saturday to pass the Jets for the fourth seed, while a Newman win or a draw will mean the game will be played back at Wilkins Field.
