WICHITA, Kan. — A fast start was all the Newman women's soccer team needed to record its second straight big win, topping Oklahoma Christian 3-0 in Heartland Conference action Thursday night at Wilkins Field.
KEY SEQUENCE
Dominating possession and already holding on to a quick lead, the Jets (6-6-5, 5-5-3, 18 pts Heartland) doubled their lead just five minutes later, as Morgan Foster put the Eagles (4-11-2, 2-9-2, 8 pts Heartland) deeper in the hole with her second goal of the game.
SCORING PLAYS
5'-NU-Morgan Foster, assist Madison Decker. Decker fed a long ball into the box, and Foster poked it past the keeper.
10'-NU-Foster, assist Rosa Urista-Chico. A long pass from the right side from Urista-Chico crossed the box and fell at Foster's foot, and she put it home with one touch.
50'-NU-Erin Mink, assist Foster. A short pass from Foster just into the box found Mink, who put it between the keeper's legs for the score.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The first two shots of the game each resulted in goals by the Jets to boost them to an early lead. Both came on excellent passes to Morgan Foster, who had just the keeper to beat each time to find the back of the net.
-OC didn't shy away despite the quick deficit. The Eagles popped off three shots over the next six minutes, including one that forced a save out of Newman keeper Ashley Sweetnam. The guests only managed two more shots the rest of the half though, both resulting in saves for Sweetnam.
-In the meantime, Newman kept the pressure on, as Urista-Chico put up two shots, Erin Mink two more, and Sheree Molina another as the OC defense had to stay on its heels for much of the opening half.
-Once again, it didn't take long after an opening whistle for the Jet offense to click, as Newman's first shot of the second half also resulted in a goal as Mink's crack found the back of the net.
With Kelsi Langley in goal for the second half, the senior made her only save in the 53rd minute as the Eagles took a shot from the top of the box, but another flurry from Newman answered the shot, as Caitlin Davis, Mink and Foster again peppered the goal with shots.
-The Jets closed things out allowing just two errant shots in the final 20 minutes.
NOTES
-Looking for their late-season charge to result in a postseason berth, the Jets held up their end of the bargain, but saw Lubbock Christian also earn a win to seal the final spot in the Heartland Conference playoff bracket.
-As the Newman offense continues to break out, it's defense calmly pushed its shutout number to double digits with its 10th clean sheet of the season. The Jets have now allowed just 11 goals in 17 games this season.
-It was the first time since the end of last season that Newman netted three goals in back-to-back games. Foster has found her scoring touch as well, scoring four goals and adding an assist in the past three games.
