Jets Slither Past The Rattlers On The Road

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Newman volleyball team started its weekend of Heartland Conference play by sweeping St. Mary's 3-0 on the road this evening.

KEY SEQUENCE

The Jets (14-6, 3-2 Heartland) dominated Set 1 and won with ease but gave up leads late in Set 2 and 3 but rallied back and struck the Rattlers (9-8, 3-3 Heartland) to steal the last two sets and the match on the road.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Set 1

-Newman never trailed in Set 1 and came out fast to have an early 5-1 lead.
-St. Mary's would trail 9-7 still early in the set but that was the closest they would get to tying things up.
-The Jets would end the set in dominating fashion by scoring the last seven points by way of two kills from Emily Harvey and Kayla Turner, one kill from Jarin Braithwait and two errors from the Rattlers.
-Harvey would lead the Jets in Set 1 with 10 kills.

Set 2

-Newman would once again jump out to an early 5-1 lead but this time coming in Set 2.
-The Jets would have a comfortable 14-7 lead a little over halfway through the set, but the Rattlers would close the gap by scoring four straight points to put the score at 14-11.
-Newman would extend its lead out to 17-12 but once again the Rattlers would slither their way back into it by making the score 17-16 and eventually get their first lead of the set at 22-21.
-A kill from Harvey would tie things up at 23-23 and with a little help from St. Mary's on back-to-back errors would close out the set and give the Jets a 2-0 lead heading into Set 3.

Set 3

-Newman would get an early lead again but this time it would be 3-0 early on.
-The Jets were in a familiar spot having a comfortable seven point lead a little over halfway through the set at 15-8. The Rattlers would battle back and put the score at 20-17 still in favor of Newman.
-Three straight points from St. Mary's would tie things up at 20-20.
-The Rattlers would jump out in front 23-21 late in the set but that wouldn't faze the Jets at all because they would storm back to score the last four points of the set.
-Newman scored the last four points of the final set in this order: Kill by Hailey Braddy, block by Yemima Buana and Tuner and back-to-back kills from Harvey to end the set and secure a sweep for the Jets.
