DeGrate Helps Boost Jets To Win To Finish Alaska Trip

FAIRBANKS, Alaska — Closing out its holiday trip to Alaska with its sixth consecutive victory, the Newman women's basketball team took control early in the second half and went on to grab a 71-57 win over Stanislaus State Saturday.

KEY SEQUENCE

Seeing a healthy second-quarter lead chipped away at, the Jets (6-2) went on another run to start the third quarter against the Warriors (2-5). After Stan State cut the lead to two points, Bria DeGrate answered with a 3-pointer, and Mali Wright hit free throws on back-to-back possessions to make it a 39-30 game less than three minutes into the second half.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Down by five early, Wright and Hannah Alexander each picked up a basket to cut the lead to one. Cierra Tjaden added another at the 5:24 mark to make it 8-7. The Warriors went up 9-8, a lead they held for over three minutes, but a DeGrate free throw tied it, and a 3-pointer by the sophomore 40 seconds later gave the Jets the lead for good.

-Jumpers from Alexander and DeGrate pushed the lead to five in the first two minutes of the second quarter, and two big treys by DeGrate made it a 24-15 game with 6:38 left in the half. Wright twice bumped the lead out to 10 with layups, the last coming with four minutes to go before Stan State clawed their way back into it with an 8-0 run.

-After the Jets opened up their lead in the third quarter, two more big 3-pointers, one each by Jazzmen Ortiz and DeGrate, in the final 90 seconds of the period made it 52-43. A three-point play by Carolina Bianchi to start off the fourth quarter opened the lead out to 12.

-A 3-pointer by Natalia Hausmann followed by a bucket from Alexander gave Newman its biggest lead of the game at 60-45 with 8:06 to play. The Warriors got it as close as 66-57 in the final two minutes, but DeGrate answered with yet another 3-pointer and Ortiz iced it with a pair of free throws.
