WICHITA, Kan. – A lopsided final 10 minutes of the first half was enough to push the Newman men's basketball team out to a big lead on the way to a 94-45 victory over Kansas Christian in its final nonconference game of the season Tuesday night at Fugate Gymnasium.
KEY SEQUENCE
The Jets (2-7) were caught up in a tight start against the Falcons (6-8) until 10 points from
Taylor Schieber keyed a 14-0 run that spanned four minutes, taking it from a four-point Newman lead to a 32-14 advantage with five minutes to go in the opening half.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Newman would trail 2-0 early in the first half but a Schieber 3-pointer would be the first Jet basket of the evening and put the Jets out in front 3-2.
-Another Schieber 3-pointer would give the Jets the lead throughout the remainder of the game and make the score 8-6 with 16:23 to play in the first half.
-Newman would go on a 6-0 run with a layup from
Grant Meininger and back-to-back baskets from
Jacob Birnbaum to give it an 18-10 advantage with 11:38 to play in the first half.
-The Jets would go on a 14-0 run to break away from the Falcons, with Schieber scoring 10 points,
Kevin Bryant adding a 3-pointer and Daniel Nwosu contributing with a free throw to put the score at 32-14.
-A 15-0 run to close out the first half bolstered the hosts even more, as
Allen Wilson hit two 3-pointers after converting a three-point play, and Schieber added a layup at the buzzer to make it 47-19 at the break.
-Starting out the second half with another seven points, the Jets were able to bump their lead out to 54-19 thanks to the 22-0 run that spanned the break. Nwosu went for five points, with Bryant adding assists on both baskets.
-The game slowed down from there as the two sides kept each other from going on any big runs. The Falcons got as close as down 32, while the Jet bench helped build the lead as high as 49 at the end.
