WICHITA, Kan. – The Newman women's basketball team completed its nonconference schedule by facing Kansas Christian Tuesday evening inside Fugate Gymnasium, controlling the game from the start and winning a decisive 109-45 game.
KEY SEQUENCE
The Jets (10-2) got out to a fast 14-0 start and didn't hold back against the Falcons (5-7) by going on runs of 11, eight, seven and five points to close out the first half of play and then held onto an insurmountable lead throughout the second half.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-
Bria DeGrate would nail a 3-pointer for the first points of the game and Newman would score the next 11 points to get out to an early 14-0 lead in the first quarter.
-Another DeGrate 3-pointer would start an eight-point run for the Jets midway through the first quarter,
Mali Wright and
Cierra Tjaden would add layups and a
Kendra Butler free throw would complete the 8-0 run.
-The Jets would go on an 11-point run next, both
Jazzmen Ortiz and Bulter would combine for four points and DeGrate would add another 3-pointer her collection during the 11-0 run.

Iva Krstevska would close out the second quarter by scoring seven of the last 15 points for Newman, which included a layup at the buzzer to put the Jets up 52-15 at half.
-The Jets would go on another 14-0 run but this time early in the third quarter,
Natalia Hausmann and DeGrate both scored six points and Butler added two points during the run.

Melanie George sank two free throws to close out the third quarter, which also completed the 8-0 run that Newman was on.

Carolina Bianchi scored all six of her points in the fourth quarter, George would score the game's final point with a free throw to put the final score at 109-45.

NOTES
-With this evening's win the Jets get ever closer to their Division II era win streak of 11 games, only needing one more win to tie the school record.
-Newman had six players score in double figures, DeGrate and Krstevska with a game-high 21 points, George and Hausmann with 13 points, while Butler and Ortiz added 10 points.
-The Jets were two points shy of their Division II school record of points in a game with 111 that came on Feb. 24, 2011 against Oklahoma Panhandle State.
