WICHITA, Kan. – The Newman women's basketball team started its conference schedule Saturday afternoon against St. Edward's inside Fugate Gymnasium, dropping the game 66-48 to begin Heartland Conference play.
KEY SEQUENCE
The Jets (10-3, 0-1 Heartland) would struggle to get things going early in both the first and third quarters, and the Hilltoppers (5-5, 1-0 Heartland) would take advantage of a 15-0 run in the first quarter and a 20-6 run in the third quarter to stay out in front throughout the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Newman would score the first basket of the game from a
Hannah Alexander layup but St. Edward's would go on a 15-0 run to take an early 15-2 lead in the first quarter.
-
Natalia Hausmann would hit a pair of free throws, while
Cierra Tjaden and
Melanie George would sink a free throw a piece to make the score 15-6 late in the first quarter.
-The Jets would come out with some fire to start the second quarter by going a 9-0 run with
Bria DeGrate leading the way with seven points and
Mali Wright scoring two points to make it 21-17 midway through the second quarter.
-Newman scored the final four-points of the first half with layups coming from
Sheanna James and Tjaden to make the score 33-24 heading into halftime.
-The Hilltoppers would control the third quarter, a Tjaden jumper with 2:31 left in the quarter made it 47-32 but St. Edward's would hit back-to-back 3-pointers to go up 53-32 heading into the final quarter of play.
-Newman would go on a 6-0 run late in the fourth quarter to put the score at 61-44 with layups from DeGrate and Alexander along with a pair of made free throws from James.
-A layup from Hausmann would be the final basket of the game, making the final score 66-48.
