Jets Sharp-Shooting Brings The Eagles Down

WICHITA, Kan. – After getting its first Heartland Conference victory of the season on Saturday, the Newman men's basketball team squared up against Oklahoma Christian Monday afternoon at Fugate Gymnasium, coming away with an 86-71 win before the holiday break.

KEY SEQUENCE

The Jets (4-7, 2-0 Heartland) went down early against the Eagles (5-4, 1-1 Heartland) but rebounded by going on an 17-4 run in the first half to retake the lead heading into halftime and sealed the deal by going on a 16-2 run midway through the second half to keep OC out of arms reach.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-A Christian DeYoung 3-pointer would be the first points of the game for Newman but Oklahoma Christian would quickly get out to ten-point lead by going on an 11-0 run to make the score 15-5 with 13:27 to play in the first half.

-An Allen Wilson 3-pointer would snap the Eagles 11-0 run and Jacob Birnbaum would hit a jumper to get the Jets within five points with 12:03 left in the first half.

-A 6-0 run for Newman a little over midway through the first half would put the Jets back out in front at 22-19, Taylor Schieber and Kevin Bryant both made layups, while Grant Meininger cashed in two free throws during the run.

-Daniel Nwosu, Jr. took matters into his own hands and went on a 9-0 solo run by nailing three straight 3-pointers, which gave Newman a 38-28 lead. Nwosu Jr. would then finish the first half of play by hitting another 3-pointer with a few seconds remaining on the clock and gave the Jets a 41-32 lead at half.

-The Eagles would cut into the Newman lead early in the second half to make the score 46-44, but a timely 3-pointer from Bryant would push the lead back out to five points with 15:53 to play.

-A 3-pointer from an OC player would get the Eagles within one point of the Jet lead, but a 16-2 run for the Jets would put the score at 68-53 with 8:18 left in regulation. During the run Schieber knocked down two 3-pointers, while Wilson connected on one.

-With 2:38 left to play the Eagles trailed by seven points but a put-back dunk from Daniel Green, followed by a fast break layup from Nwosu Jr. would put the Jets lead up to 11 points with 2:04 to play.

-A clutch 3-pointer from Schieber in the left corner of the wing as the shot clock was winding down would put the game out of reach and thus lead to an 86-71 victory.

-Bryant was two rebounds away from a third straight double-double, finishing with 12 points and eight rebounds.

-As a team, the Jets set a season-high in 3-pointers made with 15. Schieber led the way with five, Nwosu Jr. had four, Wilson chipped in three, Bryant hit two and DeYoung with one.
