WEATHERFORD, Okla. — Belting out 14 hits, the Newman baseball team rallied late to catch up to Southwestern Oklahoma State before falling just short, 13-12, in the finale of the season-opening three-game series Saturday afternoon.
The Jets (1-2) trailed 11-1 after three innings, but that didn't faze them as they chipped away at the score over the final six frames, plating seven in the seventh inning and two more in the top of the ninth before the Bulldogs (3-4) closed the door.
Eight different players had a hit for Newman, led by Lucas Norton, who went 3-for-3 with two doubles after entering the game to pinch hit in the seventh, and Garett Thomas, who went 3-for-5 with a home run and a double. Tyler Bugner had two hits and two walks, while Aaron Mack added a pair of base knocks.
After allowing seven runs in the first to SWOSU and then another four in the bottom of the third to spot the hosts 11 runs to just a lone RBI double by Thomas in the second, the Newman bats — and bullpen — started to get to work. Thomas led off the fourth with a solo homer, and a Bugner single with one out in the fourth knocked in Jacob Hamerle to make it 11-3 at the midway point of the game.
In the meantime, Bradley Altdoerffer, Corey Mondello and Trey Tucker provided 2 2/3 innings of shutout baseball, allowing just two hits and two walks combined leading up to the top of the seventh, when the Jets exploded on offense. Eleven batters came to the plate in the inning for the Jets, including Norton, who grabbed a pair of hits. Mack doubled to score Norton and scored himself, Nick Griffin added a pinch-hit double for two more runs, and Hamerle put up an RBI double before scoring on Norton's double. That made it 11-10 as the Bulldogs clung to their lead.
SWOSU put up two runs in the bottom half to answer, which proved to be the difference as the Jets got an RBI single from Bugner to plate Andrew Russell and a sac fly out of Mack to score Norton in the top of the ninth. Bugner was stranded on second as the final out was recorded.
The Jets return home next weekend, facing Wayne State in a four-game set Saturday and Sunday afternoons at McCarthy Field.
