CANYON, Texas — Running into one of the hottest teams in the country, the Newman softball team dropped a pair of games to host West Texas A&M Sunday to close out the Lady Buff Invite.
The Jets (4-8) fell by scores of 15-0 and 18-2 to the No. 22 Lady Buffs (16-0), who scored at least seven runs in all six games this weekend and hit double digits four times.
Courtney Sartin and Rachael Withers each collected a pair of hits on the day, with one of Sartin's two hits a triple. Jensen Cromer cracked a double for her lone hit of the day.
The Jets were holding tough in the first game of the day, trailing just 1-0 after two innings, but the hosts opened up with nine runs in the bottom of the third to take control.
Newman snapped their scoreless skid quickly in the second game, as Taylor Mannis singled on the second pitch of the game and was bunted over to second by Mikayla Medbery. Sartin grounded out, but that moved Mannis to third, and she scored on Kendra Mendoza's infield single to give the Jets the early lead.
The Jets got on the board again in the third, with Medbery and Sartin singling before Mendoza walked to load the bases with two outs. Missy Swanson reached on an error, allowing Medbery to score, but the Lady Buffs put up another big inning in the fourth to bring the game to an end.
Newman continues its nonconference schedule Saturday, heading to Southwest Baptist for a doubleheader.
