SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Kicking off another weekend on the road against a pair of solid opponents, the Newman tennis teams earned one big win and suffered a close loss Saturday afternoon against Lewis.

The Jet women (4-1) used dominant play from the back half of their singles lineup to secure and exciting 5-4 victory over the Flyers (2-2). Emily Wise dropped only one game all day across singles and doubles, sweeping a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles and teaming up with Tamar Tskhakaia for an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles.

Kate Bugayenko and Kateryna Stoianova each played two excellent matches on the day. Bugayenko picked up her fourth straight win at No. 1 singles, Stoianova breezed to a victory at No. 4 singles, and the two teamed up for an exciting match at No. 2 doubles, one they dropped in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (4).

Ariana Raga won the other point for the Jets, grabbing a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles.

The Jet men (1-3) were competitive in nearly every match, but couldn't get over the top in enough of them, falling 6-3 to the Flyers (4-1). Andre Ebinal, Diego Rojo Fernandez and Kevin Clack each earned wins in singles, with Clack picking up an entertaining 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (5) victory at No. 6. Lewis swept the doubles though, earning close wins at Nos. 1 and 2 and eking out a 9-8 (2) win over Clack and Ajani King at No. 3.

Both Jet squads are back in action Sunday, facing Drury, who is nationally ranked on both the men's and women's side.
