SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — A difficult roadtrip concluded with a test against a tough opponent, as the Newman men's and women's tennis teams both fell to top-40 Drury teams Sunday in Missouri.
The Jet men (1-4) hung tough with the No. 37 Panthers (4-2), with Jose Enrique Coiras and Kevin Clack breezing to wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles and Clack teaming up with Ajani King for the Jets' third point. The hosts were able to pull out a tight win at No. 1 singles, with Eduardo Santos making it a match with the No. 18-ranked singles player in the country in Max Happ, and got a three-set win at No. 4 as well as a 9-8 victory at top doubles to secure the winning points.
The Jet women (4-2) showed positive signs, but were able to pick up the necessary wins to avoid an 8-1 loss to the No. 30 Panthers (6-0). Ariana Raga earned Newman's point at No. 5 singles, grabbing a 6-4, 6-0 victory.
The Jets head back to Missouri next weekend for matches against William Jewell and Rockhurst Saturday and Sunday.
