Jets Split On Opening Day At SAU Tournament

MAGNOLIA, Ark. — Facing off against two teams that each qualified for the South Central Region tournament last season, the Newman softball team started its 2016 campaign off with a split Friday afternoon on the first day of the SAU Softball Invitational.

Courtney Sartin reached base four times on the day, Taylor Mannis added a pair of hits and Katie Ingles grabbed the first win of the year in the circle as the Jets (1-1) earned a 2-1 victory over Cameron (1-1) late in the afternoon after falling 4-0 to Texas Women's University (2-0) in the season opener.

Mannis picked up the first hit of the season to lead off Game 2, singling to left before eventually coming around to score on an error for the Jets' first run of the year in the top of the first against the Aggies. Newman plated another in the fifth, with Delaney Hiegert smacking a single to right to start things off before Jensen Cromer reached on a fielder's choice. Cromer came around to score on a wild pitch after an error moved her to third, adding a crucial insurance run it would turn out.

Back-to-back singles to start the bottom half of the fifth eventually led to Cameron's lone run — also on a wild pitch — but Ingles buttoned down from there. After the Aggies scored their run, they drew just a lone walk over their final nine plate appearances.

Ingles allowed seven hits and struck out six to earn the win.

In the first game, the Jets fell victim to a hot arm for TWU, as the Pioneers tossed a combined no-hitter despite Newman working eight walks. Mannis drew one of those walks and stole a base, while Ingles walked twice. Kate Smith went the distance for the Jets, allowing six hits and four runs, just two of them earned. The junior didn't give up a walk and fanned six.

The Jets continue their season-opening stretch in Magnolia Saturday with a 10 a.m. matchup with Delta State and a 2 p.m. contest against host Southern Arkansas.
