Jets Fall To Eagles In Doubleheader

Newman made things interesting late in Game 1 but couldn't get over the hump and in Game 2 the Jets pitched well enough to keep them close but the bats hurt their chances, as Oklahoma Christian earned a pair of wins in a Heartland Conference doubleheader Friday afternoon.

The Jets (7-17, 1-4 Heartland) went down 1-2-3 in the top of the first to start the day off. Kate Smith got the nod in the pitcher's circle for the Jets in Game 1. The Eagles (13-11, 8-0 Heartland) took flight first with a double to left field which drove in the lead-off hitter that had a triple to right field to start the bottom of the first.

The second inning went by fast for both teams with neither pitcher allowing a hit or allowing anyone on base. NU would even the score 1-1 in the top of the third with Rachel Withers scoring on a fielding error by the pitcher.

The bats were quiet for OC in the bottom of the third and for both teams in the fourth inning. That would soon change in the bottom of the fifth when the Eagles scored three runs, two of the runs came off two NU errors and the other run came from a single down the right field line to make the score 4-1 after five complete innings.

NU would return the favor in the top of the sixth, tying the game up 4-4. A Mikayla Medbery triple drove in Taylor Mannis to make it 4-2 OC. Courtney Sartin singled the following at-bat which brought Medbery home to make it 4-3 OC.

Sartin would advance to second on a throwing error from the right fielder to home on her hit and then advance to third on a groundout from a NU batter. Kendra Mendoza drove in the last NU run of Game 1 with a single, scoring Sartin from third and tying the game 4-4.

OC would answer right back in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run home run to make it 6-4. The Jets would get two batters on base in the top of the seventh, but a fly out to center field and both runners caught stealing would end Game 1, 6-4 in favor of the Eagles.

Katie Ingles was the starting pitcher for Game 2. The first two innings were scoreless for both teams and only one hit coming from OC in the bottom of the second. Mannis singled to right field in the top of the third but nothing came from it.

The Eagles would score first in the bottom of the third on a passed ball, making the score 1-0. OC would score runs in the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth OC hit a single, driving in one run and in the fifth scoring a run off a double to left center, making the score 3-0.

NU couldn't get its bats going in Game 2 having only two hits with both of them coming from Mannis in the third and sixth inning.

Newman finishes its three-game conference series against Oklahoma Christian tomorrow at noon with a single game.
